MOHAIR a brief history Mohair does not come from a MO! Mohair comes from the Angora goat. The word Mohair is a corruption of the Turkish word ‘muyhyar’ meaning the 'best selected fleece'. Mohair was known in Biblical times, for the curtains on the Hebrews' Tabernacle were woven from the snow white fleece of the goat (Exodus XXVI, vs 7). In later years the animal became restricted to Turkey in the Province of Angora. So valuable was the fleece that the Sultan placed an embargo on the export of the fibre or the animal until 1820. In more recent times Angora goats have flourished on similar terrain in South Africa, Lesotho and Texas. Today mohair is international - prized as one of the world's most luxurious natural fibres. Growing mohair is no easy task. The Angora goat is a graceful, delicate animal. Too much rain and it can contract pneumonia, too little and it may die of thirst. Predators are a problem. Baboons will literally chase a kid to its death, while Texas coyotes and South African jackals are ever present hazards Dedicated Angora goat farmers not only protect their flocks, but spare no efforts to preserve purity of breed and improve fleece quality.
MOHAIR as sweaters Mohair is a natural fibre from the Angora Goat. It is a hollow fibre, therefore it is warm but very lightweight. Mohair is the luxury natural alternative to fur, as the animals the fleece comes from are not harmed in any way and are prized for their fleeces.
